Frustration is an unpleasant emotion.
What is an emotion?
Emotions are feelings a person has about things. Some emotions help a person feel good and other emotions can make a person feel sad or upset.
What is frustration?
Frustration is the feeling of being annoyed or upset. It is related to anger and often comes with disappointment when a goal or achievement has been denied or blocked.
People can get frustrated for many reasons, these could include a feeling that you are not being listened to, sitting in traffic when you need to be somewhere, missing the putt in a golf game.
Feelings of frustration can affect a person's emotional and social health so it is important that if the person is feeling frustrated that they understand that they could:
know what the triggers are that may cause the frustration so they can be best avoided.
do breathing exercises. This will allow for the focus to be on something else rather than the cause of frustration. It may also help a person avoid hitting out or saying something they may regret.
take a walk to calm down and re-evaluate what is going on. This will help to put things into perspective and help the person understand their feelings.
talk to a friend/family member to share how the person is feeling so that they are not bottling the emotions up inside which could make the frustrations worse.
